Original Tweet: "How I got social engineered for $100k.
Honestly - incredible scam. I am super careful in terms that I search peoples etherscan, discord names, I review date created, date joined the server, twitters, review replies, etc. I can honestly say they got me, and GG to them. I had accepted the risk of a potential loss of $100K when I joined their group in the chance these dudes were legit, and then who knows what.
I was approached by @ozu_eth whom I have several punk mutuals with. After talking with him over a month or so - He invited me to join one of his seedround groups.
The process of getting into the group involved an interview with a dude who was Swedish (Karl). The interview was on valuation approaches, how to evaluate different seeds, etc. Everything the dude mentioned checked out. For example; they were discussing the issue with low float FDV and how they were looking towards an L2 strategy rather than the small to medium caps due to the risk of vapor.
After the interview, they said ok you seem like a good dude - lets give you a chance. They explained that when you first join you would have access limited and that it would take two months or a lockup before you could dive in deeper. I said sure, makes sense. There was a time delay of around one week before you even got into the discord.
After joining - it seemed to be active with numerous dudes discussing the tariff impact, eth price, random coins, etc. I searched the discord names to track down wallets that matched their pfps, etc and everything checked out. They scheduled a weekly meeting to discuss the current valuation, and the round, and there was 20 people in a voice call discussing the specifics. I asked a few questions and they answered. So it was not botted or recorded. The meeting was led by a British dude named Paul and Karl who I mentioned earlier. Ozu (American) spoke, and his verbiage was consistent with how you dmed me. So I was like ok - everything seems ok so far.
At that point, I said what the hell I'll join in on a round.
This is where things start to go sideways. The process of doing a round seemed legit - fresh wallet, fund it, deposit it, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary.
After that they kept pushing for more. First they asked me to download an investment exe. For those that know me - I'm not a stupid guy; so no way in hell am I doing that. I dragged out the process for four to five hours to see what they would do if I said I was having issues installing it. I called up my BFF @coffeeweed_eth to review the program but our virtual machine was taking too long. So I just prepped a burner, downloaded the exe. The exe had a self destruct coded in when I was trying to review the code so I 100% knew I was cooked.
After playing along - they gave up on that, and switched to something else.
A few days later they said hey; no worries about the exe but we will get it all straightened out prior to TGE. I sure no problem; then they tried to pressure me to lock up ETH to get deeper in the server as they mentioned when I first joined.
At this point I fully accepted that I wrote off the $100k, and no way in hell was I going to give these guys more.
After telling them some BS story that I would be out of the country, and that I was going to order another burner this morning to install the exe; I came back from my meetings to see I was kicked and blocked. Honestly, relief. I can finally be done with these guys.
Tldr - Got scammed by one of the best social engineering I have ever seen. Risked $100K for more - took the L. Whatever we move on."
