"Best Video Essays Creator in Web3"
I wrote a giant post recently about Nev. Dudes a goat, cares about what he does more than 99% of the creators on CT, with talent to match that.
Truly a diamond in the rough here. Follow this guy! Subscribe to his YouTube!
Here's my review of his last video:
He uploads to CT and YouTube, so make sure to watch the linked video below (and subscribe when you do).
Nev wasn't always on this side of the camera.
He actually built up a huge successful animation channel before diving into web3.
Since turning the camera around to film himself now, here are some things he's gotten REALLY good at:
β’ HE LOOKS AND TALKS TO THE CAMERA LIKE ITS A FRIEND
No huge eyes, and over the top sensationalism. He's not forcing you to pay attention to him, waving his arms around.
The way he speaks, is clear, and with a natural tone. Again, not over the top, shouting and dancing around.
β’ NEV HAS CLEARLY DONE HIS HOMEWORK
Instead of coming out with emotionally charged takes, he presents the facts he's gathered, and walks you through them.
Even if you don't agree with him, he keeps his opinion on these facts till later in the video.
β’ HE USES NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
If you listen to what he says, but watch what he does, he's telling you more than just what you hear.
While he is using his hands to speak (and fidgeting with the microphone like a damn zoomer), he also expresses confusion or mistrust, simply by facial expressions or even head scratching.
Even so, if you only listen to this video and don't watch it, you'll still have a very complete set of facts and thoughts he has made clear to you.
The pacing is great!
β’ PROPER USE OF B-ROLL
Without reading through the supporting images he adds to the screen, he gives you more to do than just listen to what he says.
Sometimes that's a pop up, sometimes a half screen with text to emphasize a word or sentence he's saying on the other half. Other times its a full screen that helps you zero in on something specific.
It's used sparingly and with intention. Not just a bunch of crammed in stock footage.
β’ HIS VIDEOS HOLD YOUR ATTENTION
Without a bunch of annoying pops and whistle sounds, Nev uses audio throughout the entire video essay.
His voice is always clear, and never competes with the music.
He uses jump cuts, but only at the end of a sentence, never interrupting his point (which is distracting for viewers).
He also uses super slow pushes in on longer wideshot scenese, which keeps your goldfish brain happy.
β’ HE DOES THINGS NOVICES TYPICALLY LEAVE OUT
Nev makes videos that all have the same style, and match the expectation of the Thumbnail. If you click on one of his videos, the contents inside match the picture on the cover.
Because the videos earn your trust, they are bingeable. For the same reason you know you can get the same BigMac at one McDonalds as another, you know you will get the same great experience if you click on another of his videos.
That's HUGE!
That's always why they're also so shareable. You'll feel like you're smarter for sharing one of these videos with someone else, as though it makes you look good because you recommended it.
He also gives a checklist to avoid experiencing the same grief he talks about going through in the video. Rather than forcing you to click a link to download something, he just builds it into the video.
BUT!
He also gives a Call to Action (CTA) to comment below if you want a download. So he's inviting engagement, and letting his audience know he's listening to them π
Lastly, he gets to the end of his video, and ends it abruptly. No recap or wind down, letting the viewers know they're at the end of the value they came for.
Its just over.
And the very last scene leads you to watch more of his content.
